Integrated Pest Management (IPM)

Garvey School District is committed to providing a safe and healthy learning environment for students, staff, and the community. In accordance with California’s Healthy Schools Act, the District uses Integrated Pest Management (IPM) practices to manage pests while minimizing risks to people, property, and the environment.

What is Integrated Pest Management?

Integrated Pest Management (IPM) is an approach to pest management that focuses on long-term prevention. The District considers a variety of methods to prevent and manage pests, including sanitation, monitoring, maintenance, and other non-chemical methods.

When additional pest control is necessary, the District considers effective methods that minimize potential risks to students, staff, the public, and the environment.

Healthy Schools Act

The California Healthy Schools Act establishes requirements for pesticide use at public schools and provides parents, guardians, and employees with information about pesticide use at school facilities.

As part of these requirements, the District:

• Maintains an Integrated Pest Management Plan.
• Provides annual notification of pesticide products expected to be used at District facilities.
• Provides parents, guardians, and employees an opportunity to request advance notification of individual pesticide applications.
• Posts warning signs in areas where applicable pesticide treatments are scheduled.
• Maintains records of pesticide use as required by law.
• Designates an IPM Coordinator to oversee the District’s IPM program and Healthy Schools Act requirements.
